Hockey for Heroes – March 13-14

Hockey for heroesNavy Youth Hockey Association is hosting the second annual Hockey for Heroes to honor and celebrate our American heroes — our veterans — at the USNA McMullen Ice Arena, Friday, March 13 – Saturday, March 14. The opening ceremony is Friday, March 13 at 7:00 pm.

Hockey for Heroes is a 24-hour, around-the-clock hockey tournament to raise awareness and money for Wounded Warrior Project, DAV, and USA Warriors Ice Hockey.

The format of the tournament is a series one-hour exhibition games played throughout the night and day, beginning Friday evening, March 13th through Saturday evening, March 14th. The tournament will feature the USA Warriors Ice Hockey standing and sled teams, a USNA alumnae team, Navy Youth Hockey teams, the West Point Jr. Black Knights, and local adult league and high school teams.

All participating teams have been challenged to raise at least $1,000 for Wounded Warrior Project through online donations.  Proceeds from the 24-hour event — which include registration fees, bucket collections, donations at the door, food concessions, sponsorships and silent auction items – will be donated to USA Warriors Ice Hockey and DAV.

The public is invited to attend and show its support of, and deep gratitude for, our military service men and women who have paid a significant personal price in defense of our nation and our freedom. Admission is free.

About our beneficiaries:

For over 10 years, Wounded Warrior Project has worked to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of post-9/11 injured veterans. Their mission is to “provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members and to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history.” For more information, visit www.woundedwarriorproject.org

The USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program was established in 2008 to operate exclusively for charitable and educational purposes for those wounded in defense of our country. The organization’s mission is to organize and administer an ice hockey program that provides a recreational, therapeutic and educational service for disabled vets. Through the game of hockey, players develop self-confidence and concentration while adjusting to their new lifestyle – helping them to be successful on and off the ice. DAV is dedicated to a single purpose: empowering all veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. They accomplish this by ensuring that veterans and their families can access the full range of benefits available to them; fighting for the interests of America’s injured heroes on Capitol Hill; and educating the public about the great sacrifices and needs of veterans transitioning back to civilian life. Navy Youth Hockey is a 501(c3) organization dedicated to development of a life-long love and passion for the game of ice hockey.  The club teaches hockey skills and teamwork to players of all ages and skill levels while building self-confidence, character, sportsmanship and citizenship in young men and women. Navy Youth Hockey fosters parent involvement, teamwork and respect for players, coaches, officials and spectators alike, both on and off the ice.
