5th Annual Marine & Maritime Career Fair this weekend

Maritime FairBack for its fifth year, the Annual Marine & Maritime Career Fair will be held on Saturday, February 28th from Noon to 3pm at Annapolis High School Cafeteria & Auditorium, 2700 Riva Road. Students in grades 6 through 12 (public, private and homeschooled) from Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay region are invited for this popular and free event.   The Fair offers students and parents something new to discover about marine and maritime careers.  This year, students and parents can learn about marine trades in the Chesapeake Bay region plus meet and talk with engineers, scientists, publishers and boat builders who represent a wide range of marine and maritime careers.  Students are also eligible for valuable door prizes including a 5 hp Lehr propane powered outboard motor. For further information contact eycfoundation.org or 888-383-8777.

Laura Carty, a Severna Park High School student who was among the over 200 students who attended last year said, ”The fair is a great time to explore all the different fields and to decide what interests you the most. To keep track of what you learn, you should bring a pen and a backpack for carrying all the fun swag, freebies, and cool information from exhibitors.”

Exhibitors will share their knowledge and expertise about careers connected to the Chesapeake Bay and our nation’s oceans, rivers and lakes.  Students can meet industry experts from educational institutions, industries, non-profits and the military about different career paths including:  the marine trades (electronics, carpentry, plumbing, engines, boat building, marina management, sail making, sail rigging, Interior design, etc.); engineering, naval architecture, product development, marketing, publishing, port management and commercial shipping.

Students can attend informative presentations on: Marine Trades in the Chesapeake Bay Region (2pm); STEM Role Models: Engineers, Scientists, Boat Builders …careers based on Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (1pm).

The career fair is presented annually by the Eastport Yacht Club Foundation (EYCF), Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) and the National Sailing Center & Hall of Fame (NSHOF).  Sponsors for 2015 include the Marine Trades Association of Maryland (MTAM) & the Chesapeake Area Professional Captain’s Association (CAPCA).

Partners, sponsors, exhibitors and volunteers continue their commitment to educate students on pathways into marine and maritime careers and help students better understand the breadth of career paths that span apprenticeships, technical training, 2-4 year college and advanced degrees.  Student participants are also eligible to apply for MAST Scholarships sponsored by the Eastport Yacht Club Foundation and which may be applied to further degree or certificate oriented post-high school education.

Win major door prizes. Student pre-registration is NOT REQUIRED to attend but is required to be eligible for GRAND DOOR PRIZES. Register at eycfoundation.org before noon on February 26. ALL student attendees are eligible for dozens of other door prizes donated by our exhibitors and supporters!   Please note that students must be present, when their name is drawn, to win.
