Sun Valley 6 brings affordable moviegoing back to Glen Burnie

filmscreeningA new 752-seat movie theater — with six screens, the latest in seating and in projection and sound equipment — is coming to the Sun Valley Shopping Center in Glen Burnie as part of the center’s current major remodeling. Ceremonies marking the grand opening of Sun Valley 6 will occur Friday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. with a ribbon cutting by county officials.

The announcement of the new theater, located in the shopping center at the intersection of Mountain Road and Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard, was made by Ira Miller, President of Sun Valley Movie Theaters, Inc. Miller has 30 years of experience in owning and managing movie theaters in Maryland.

Sun Valley 6 will feature stadium seating with Mobiliario highback rockers, the latest in seating design. Audiences will view movies presented with a surround sound system and by NEC Digital Projectors with 3-D capacity. Based on popularity, the six screens will air shows divided into two larger and four smaller theaters.

A unique feature of the theater will be its offerings and pricing. The movies to be shown will be those that have just completed their first-run airing, and the pricing will reflect a discount of first-run ticket prices.

“Such a movie house is called in the trade ‘an intermediate theater,’ and I am the owner of the only other one now operating in Maryland — Beltway Movies,” Miller said. “We will be showing mostly family friendly movies and comedies, with prices now planned for $3.50 a ticket before 4 p.m. and $4.50 afterwards for adults and remaining at $3.50 for children.”

Miller said the plans for Sun Valley 6 are “to make it the nicest theater that the Glen Burnie area has ever had. No other Glen Burnie movie house has had stadium seating, and we are putting in seats that are the best designed since the 1980s.”

The 18,000 sq.ft. Sun Valley 6 is the newest addition to the Sun Valley Shopping Center, an 80,000 sq.ft. facility which is undergoing a major remodeling inside and out by its owner Crown Realty Development. Among stores in the center being refurbished is the 30,000 sq.ft. Geresbeck’s Food Market, offering a full-service bakery, fresh meat and poultry department, and deli.

In addition, Crown Realty Development has redesigned store fronts, upgraded the center’s lighting and resurfaced the parking lot to accommodate existing businesses and attract new tenants.

“We are thrilled to see what is happening at Sun Valley Shopping Center and with the theater,” said Mary Burkholder, executive vice president of the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation. She noted that the center is located in one of 16 areas in the county designated for revitalization and reinvestment. “We have been working with Leonard Attman of Crown Realty for the past three years on his plans for the shopping center, and we like what we see,” she said.
