In late October, Anne Arundel County’s second of its two detention centers earned 100 percent compliance during an audit conducted by the Maryland Commission on Correctional Standards. The Ordnance Road Correctional Center, located in Glen Burnie, was evaluated based on standards including security, procedures and treatment of inmates set in place to ensure all local and state correctional facilities are in compliance with state-adopted accreditation standards. The county’s Jennifer Road Detention Center also met 100 percent compliance during its audit conducted in August.
“I am incredibly proud of the dedicated men and women who work in our detention facilities for their hard work not only in preparation for this audit, but year-round,” said County Executive Laura Neuman. “Our 100 percent compliance ratings are reflections of their commitment to excellence, and this recognition is well-deserved.”
Auditors assessed every operation within the Ordnance Road Correctional Center, and reported that everything was found to be in 100 percent compliance upon completion of their initial evaluation. Terry Kokolis, Superintendent of Anne Arundel County’s Department of Detention Facilities, explained such a rating is uncommon of first visits and many facilities undergo additional audits before achieving a perfect assessment.
“To have two jails in the same department receive 100 percent compliance with no recommendations for improvement is just phenomenal,” Kokolis said, adding that this is the first time both of the county’s detention facilities have achieved such an accomplishment during the same audit cycle. “Each of our employees played a role in this, and our perfect compliance speaks to the quality of the people who work in our detention facilities.”
