The Maryland Republican Party is demanding that O’Malley/Brown appointee George Johnson resign as Superintendent of Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police because he is using taxpayer resources for his political campaign.

“George Johnson continues to draw a salary of $143,046 for his taxpayer-funded job while spending his time campaigning for Anne Arundel County Executive,” said MDGOP Executive Director Joe Cluster. “He is using his position, as well as his state-issued computer, e-mail system and cell phone for campaign business. This is a clear violation of Maryland Public Ethics Law, and we demand that he resign immediately from his State job.”

Records obtained through the Maryland Public Information Act detail numerous violations of the law, including Johnson attending political events and meetings for his campaign during normal working hours, e-mails from his state account soliciting campaign funds, and using his state-issued cell phone for fundraising and campaign business. Citizens are tired of the abuses of power that go on by a party with a monopoly, led by Governor Martin O’Malley and Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown.

“The ethics law makes allowances for elected officials to attend campaign events, but there are no such exceptions for state employees,” Cluster said. “The records we obtained clearly show that George Johnson makes no distinction between his taxpayer-funded job and his effort to win an election. He used his taxpayer-funded cell phone for 41 calls with his campaign manager.”
