canterville-cta-231x300Get ready for a somewhat spooky, wholly hilarious production just in time for Halloween! Children’s Theatre of Annapolis (CTA) will soon open its 56th season with Oscar Wilde’s “The Canterville Ghost,” a ghoulish comedy that’s appropriate and fun for the entire family.

Directed by Joe Thompson of Annapolis and featuring the talents of more than 30 youth from throughout the area, CTA’s “The Canterville Ghost” opened October 17 and runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through October 26 with evening and matinee performances. Show times are at 7:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 2:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays . Tickets are now on sale.

What’s the show about?

“The Canterville Ghost” blends the comic with the macabre in its telling of the Otis family, who move into the English manor Canterville Chase, said to be haunted by the ghost of the late Sir Canterville himself. But this rambunctious American family doesn’t believe in specters and spooks, and despite the ghost’s best efforts to haunt the house and scare them away, Sir Canterville finds that the tables are turned – he is the one being terrorized by the children in the family! A spooky comedy with some zany scenes, Oscar Wilde’s story is also a sweet tale of the power of love.

What can audiences expect?

In keeping with its tradition of exciting theatricality in all aspects of production, CTA will recreate the surprises of the classic short story with plenty of fine-tuned character acting from the kids, exciting technical effects, and impressive sets and costumes that evoke the story’s haunted setting.

Come in costume!

To get audiences into the Halloween spirit, CTA will also hold a costume contest at each performance of “The Canterville Ghost.” Children can come dressed up as something spooky or something silly (or even something that’s a creative blend of both) and possibly receive a very special prize at the end of the performance. One winner will be named at each show!
