community foundationThe Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County is pleased to announce the names of the recipients of its Celebration of Philanthropy Awards for 2014. This year’s awardees are: Philanthropists of the Year, John and Terri Hussman; Corporate Philanthropist, The Bank of Glen Burnie; Volunteer of the Year, Betty Mack; and Foundation of the Year, South Anne Arundel Rotary Foundation.

The 14th annual Celebration of Philanthropy Awards Luncheon will be on Friday, November 21st , 2014, 11.30 am to 2.00 pm, at the Doubletree Hotel on Riva Road in Annapolis..  The event is sponsored by the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County and co-presented by Chaney Enterprises and  Connelly & Associates LLC. The emcee is Carroll Hynson.

According to Elizabeth Kinney and Pam Siemer who nominated the Hussmans for the Philanthropists of the Year Award on behalf of The Light House, “John and Terri Hussman exemplify the true meaning of philanthropy. Their generosity of spirit, financial resources, love, compassion, commitment and understanding for those in need of a second chance or a first opportunity, is overwhelming.

“Through their Foundation they have a global reach. But they choose to live in Maryland, selflessly donating their time and treasure here to help make a better world. There is no better example of two individuals who share one vision and the capacity to execute that vision through their personal efforts.”

The Hussman Foundation provides life-changing assistance through medical research, education, and direct aid to vulnerable individuals who have urgent needs or significant disabilities. They focus on projects that can save or significantly improve lives at a small financial commitment per person affected. The Foundation also helps organizations to develop grant-writing and reporting procedures so they can secure long-term funding from broader sources.

The Bank of Glen Burnie was nominated by Partners in Care for the Corporate Philanthropy Award with support from both the Greater Severna Park and Arnold Chamber of Commerce, and the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce.

Says nominator, Anne Myers, “While The Bank of Glen Burnie is small, it is a mighty force for good in the community, generously sharing its financial and human resources.  One example is the Bank’s support for the Glen Burnie Improvement Association, which just held its 107th Carnival. Every year Bank employees man the gates, sell tickets, and work in the kitchen. And the Bank’s officers all work on ‘Special Day’ when the Carnival is open only to the community’s special needs children.

“Many of the Bank’s officers serve on local boards and the philanthropy starts at the top. Bank President and CEO, Mike Livingston, models the character and behavior that has always been the hallmark of this locally-owned community bank which, this year, celebrates its 65th anniversary. While it is a small, local bank, it is a significant philanthropist to the communities it serves, giving direct financial support and human resources to numerous nonprofit organizations.”

Volunteer of the Year is Betty Mack, a county resident and volunteer for more than 50 years. She has been involved in service to others through St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, the Anne Arundel County Public Schools, her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, and many other civic organizations.

Her nominator, Lillie Caldwell, says, “Betty’s unselfish giving of her time, talent and resources has brought about many positive and productive interactions in the county that might not have happened without her.”

The Foundation of the Year Award for 2014 goes to the South Anne Arundel County Rotary Foundation. Their Nominator is Lynette Entzian, President of the Business and Community Advisory Board for Southern High School (BCAB).

She says, “The Foundation has strongly supported the BCAB over the years, specifically with a $5,000 donation towards the build-out of the Career & College Center, and their members are strong supporters of BCAB activities such as our mock interviews. Routinely Rotary members  comprise up to half of our interviewers.

“In short, the work of the South AA County Rotarians, as well as their foundation donations,  dramatically impacts the students and faculty at Southern High School. The foundation is a worthy recipient of your Foundation of the Year award.”

Says Bess Langbein, Executive Director of the Community Foundation, “Each year we are pleased to honor extraordinary people in our county whose generosity and selflessness make it a better place for us all to live. This year’s awardees are no exception.”

Tickets to the Celebration of Philanthropy luncheon are $100 and can be purchased by contacting www.cfaac.org or the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County, 914 Bay Ridge Road, Suite 220, Annapolis, MD 21403.  For more information, call 410-280-1102 or email [email protected].
