image002-1On Saturday, October 25, the Chesapeake Bay Trust will host its 5K for the Bay…Part Deux at Seneca Creek State Park in Montgomery County. This 3.1 mile run/walk will start at 7:45 am with all proceeds benefitting Chesapeake Bay restoration and educational programs. Earlier this year the Trust held its annual 5K for the Bay at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis which sold out with more than 650 runners participating. In an effort to offer another opportunity to racers who couldn’t participate in that 5K, the Trust launched its 5K for the Bay…Part Deux to be held next month. The Chesapeake Bay Trust is a nonprofit, grant-making organization dedicated to improving the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers through environmental education, community outreach, and local watershed restoration.

“We were so pleased that so many runners, walkers and friends came out to support the Chesapeake Bay Trust through our 5K for the Bay earlier this year,” said Molly Alton Mullins, the Chesapeake Bay Trust’s director of communications and race director. “Unfortunately we had to sell out that race and turn participants away, so we decided to offer an additional opportunity to explore another one of Maryland’s most stunning outdoor places, Seneca Creek State Park.”

In total, more than 300 runners are expected to attend this race, to be held rain or shine. Pre-registration is $30 per runner ($35 on race day), students ages 10-17 are $10 and children nine and under are free. Leashed pets and joggings strollers are welcome and runners can register online at  All race registrants will receive a tee shirt, gourmet coffee, bagels, and Buffalo wings, as well as prizes for the fastest racers in various age groups. In addition to Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company serving as the title sponsor for this event, there has been exceptional community support from local businesses. Buffalo Wild Wings, Toyota Scion, Panera Gaithersburg, Fleet Feet Gaithersburg, Wegmans, Bowie Baysox, and API Source have all joined as sponsors.

“We wanted to make this event really fun and family friendly while also getting people outside raising money for a great cause, restoring the Chesapeake Bay and our natural resources,” continued Mullins. “The course will take racers along a beautiful trail around Clopper Lake and I personally think there is no better time to run in Maryland than during the fall. We hope fun and serious racers alike will take advantage of this opportunity to do something great for our environment and for themselves as well.”
