When Mr. John Bengough became the victim of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) on April 10th, he was given the gift of life by the fast actions of his son and a neighbor who came to his aid, performing CPR to keep his blood circulating until fire department personnel arrived. Today, Mr. Bengough assisted with the presentation of the Gift of Life Award to his neighbor, son and fire department responders who provided lifesaving care to him on that day.

On the afternoon of April 10th, Mr. Bengough, his son John Bengough, Jr. and neighbor, Mr. Troy Brown, Sr. were working on a vehicle in Mr. Bengough’s driveway in preparation for a trip the following day. While working on the vehicle, Mr. Bengough began feeling ill and experiencing chest pains and went inside to rest for a few minutes. At the suggestion of Mr. Brown, Mr. Bengough’s son went in to check on his father. Upon finding him unresponsive on the floor and “not breathing right,” he summoned Mr. Brown inside to help. Mr. Brown found Mr. Bengough unresponsive and calling on his first responder training from when he was a Washington Transit Police Officer, he began to assist Mr. Bengough. He found Mr. Bengough to be in cardiac arrest and performed CPR while directing John, Jr. to call 911. Mr. Brown continued CPR until the arrival of fire department personnel.

Engine 5 staffed by Captain James Kunath, Firefighter III Michael Dorsey and FFII David M. Pennell II and Paramedic 5 staffed by FF/EMT-P Brian Turchetta and FF/EMT-I Mary Poulis arrived and began providing patient care. Through the application of High Performance CPR, multiple defibrillations, administration of IV medications and placement of an advanced airway, Mr. Bengough had a pulse upon arrival at Baltimore Washington Medical Center and was attempting to breathe on his own. He was further stabilized in the Emergency Department at BWMC prior to going to the cardiac catheterization lab.

On the basis of their lifesaving actions on April 10th, Mr. Troy Brown, Sr. and John Bengough, Jr. were awarded the citizen Gift of Life Award. Captain James Kunath, FF/EMT-P Brian Turchetta, FF/EMT-I Mary Poulis, FFIII Michael Dorsey and FFII David M. Pennell II were presented the Gift of Life Award for fire department personnel.
