jrdcAnne Arundel County’s Jennifer Road Detention Center (JRDC) was found to be in 100 percent compliance with all standards earlier this month following an audit conducted by the Maryland Commission on Correctional Standards. Scheduled every three years, the audit evaluates 80 standards including security, procedures and treatment of inmates to ensure all local and state correctional facilities are in compliance with state-adopted accreditation standards.

“I am so proud of all the hardworking men and women in our Department of Detention Facilities who work tirelessly each day to maintain the highest standards of excellence in our facilities year-round,” said County Executive Laura Neuman. “Our compliance rating and accreditation are reflections of our employees’ unparalleled dedication, and this recognition is well-deserved.”

Over the course of four days, 10 auditors assessed every operation within the JRDC in Annapolis, and reported that everything was found to be in 100 percent compliance upon completion of their initial evaluation. Terry Kokolis, Superintendent of Anne Arundel County’s Department of Detention Facilities, explained such a rating is uncommon of first visits and many facilities undergo additional audits before achieving a perfect assessment.

“The auditors were very complimentary of our staff for their cooperation, the cleanliness of the facility and the overall professionalism they witnessed,” Kokolis said. “The people who work here are really proud of the accomplishment – everybody had a part in it, and it gives them a sense of ownership.”

The Department of Detention Facilities will be awarded its official Jennifer Road Detention Center Accreditation on September 25. The county’s other detention center, the Ordnance Road Correctional Center in Glen Burnie, will undergo an audit in October.
