Baysox end season with a loss

Baysox 2013IMG_9937The Baysox fell to Altoona 6-5 Monday afternoon in the 2014 season finale. Bowie will finish the season 72-70 and at .500 or better for the eighth consecutive season despite falling a game short of the playoffs.

The Baysox jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning against Altoona starter Joely Rodriguez. Mike Yastrzemski hit a lead off single to second base and later scored from second on a two-out Chris Marrero RBI single to right field to give Bowie a 1-0 lead.

The Curve took the lead in the top of the third inning against Baysox starter Zach Davies. Matt Curry hit a lead off single to center field and Ralph Henriquez then reached on a fielding error by third baseman Sharlon Schoop. Gift Ngoepe brought both runs home with a double to center field and he later scored from third base with one-out on a Dan Gamache single to center field.

Bowie got one run back in the bottom half of the inning. Sammie Starr hit a lead off single to center field and scored from second base on a one out single to center field from K.D. Kang to make the score 3-2.

The Baysox took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Zane Chavez hit a lead off single to left field and scored on a one-out Mike Yastrzemski triple to center field. Yastrzemski then scored on a Garabez Rosa single to center field to give Bowie a 4-3 lead.

Sharlon Schoop extended the Baysox lead to 5-3 with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Altoona tied the game in the top of the seventh inning against Baysox reliever Julio DePaula. Henriquez hit a lead off double to center field and scored on a Ngoepe triple to right field. Keon Broxton brought the second run of the inning home with a two-out double to left field that tied the game 5-5.

Andy Vasquez gave the Curve a 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth inning with a solo homer to center field to lead off the inning.

Davies pitched six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out seven in the no decision. DePaula pitched two innings and allowed three runs on four hits while striking out two in the loss. Reliever Marcel Prado pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the Baysox.

Rodriguez pitched seven innings and allowed five runs on nine hits while striking out three in the win.
