On Tuesday, September 16th Detectives from the Annapolis Police Department arrested Vernell Williams, 23, of Annapolis for the shooting that occurred on Monday, September 15th outside the “Pip” Moyer Recreation Center (PMRC).

On Monday, September 15th at 5:35 p.m. officers responded to the outdoor basketball courts near PMRC for reports of shots fired.  Upon arrival they spoke to witnesses who said that both the
victim and the suspect, Williams, had left the area.  The victim, Marlon Mitchell, 25, of Annapolis, left the area in a vehicle and was located at Smithville Street and Russell Street.  Mitchell was shot in the arm.  He was transported to Baltimore Shock Trauma with non-life threatening injuries.

Mitchell and Williams were on the basketball courts when they began arguing.  Williams left the area, but returned with a gun.  He fired several times, striking Mitchell once in the arm.  A round also struck PMRC, penetrating a window in a room where patrons of the Center were exercising.  No one was struck by this round.

Williams ran off on foot into the woods around the basketball courts.  Officers formed a perimeter and checked the area with K-9 and helicopter, but Williams was not located.

Detectives identified Williams as the suspect and obtained a warrant for him.  He was arrested and charged with attempted first and second degree murder, first and second degree assault, use of a firearm in a felony or violent crime, reckless endangerment, and handgun on person.

“The “Pip” Moyer Recreation Center has always been a safe place for visitors and employees.  This was an isolated incident with a quick resolution,” said Chief Michael Pristoop.  “Hopefully, the system will work and keep Williams off the street.”
