Thunder strikes in Baysox shutout defeat

Baysox 2013IMG_9950The Baysox dropped a seventh game in their last nine on Friday night in a 9-0 loss in Trenton. It was the first defeat for Bowie of the year against the Thunder after winning the first six ballgames between the clubs.

The Baysox threatened early. LF Mike Yastrzemski led off the game with a single and got to second base on a bunt base hit by 3B Niuman Romero. The Baysox could not convert though as after a strikeout registered the first out, a strike out throw out double play ended the inning. It started a trend as the Baysox left one runner aboard in each of its first eight innings.

Trenton went to work in the second inning. The Thunder loaded the bases with no outs but Bowie turned a double play on a chopper to first base. 1B Buck Britton gloved bear the bag and stepped on it while throwing home where C Michael  Ohlman put a tag on the runner at the plate for the out. The following hitter, CF Mason Williams singled home both remaining runners and the Baysox trailed 2-0.

After an unearned run in the third inning, the long ball struck. Williams hit a two-run home run on a high fly ball down the right field line to make it 5-0 in the fourth inning. RF Tyler Austin hit a line drive three-run home run to left field to push the advantage to 8-0. All nine runs were on the ledger of Baysox starter Anthony Vasquez.

Bowie got good work out of the pen with two scoreless innings apiece from Marcel Prado and Jake Pettit. Yastrzemski, Romero and Ohlman all had multi-hit games in the loss. Coinciding with an Akron win, Bowie is now 6.5 games out of the playoff picture in the Eastern League’s West.

Saturday, August 9th, RHP Zach Davies will take to the mound. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. as the reigning Eastern league Pitcher of the Week toes the slab. Coverage will begin 20-minutes prior to first pitch on wnav.com.

Bowie returns home for Military Appreciation Night presented by Andrews Federal Credit Union on Friday, August 15th against Trenton at 6:35 p.m. The first 1,000 fans will get a card set composed of local military heroes and fireworks will follow the game.
