Catonsville man drives home in a new Lexus after Bayhawks win

2014-08-09 20.16.14-2Yesterday proved to be an unusual day for the Chesapeake Bayhawks as their disappointing season came to an end.  They had an unplanned encounter with their opponent, they completely dominated in the game held at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, and they gave away a new Lexus from Sheehy Lexus to a lucky fan.

Strange Breakfast Bedfellows

Public appearances for the five time world-champion Bayhawks are commonplace. Throughout the season, the players, the Hawkettes cheerleaders, Hawkeye the mascot, and The Steinfeld Cup make the rounds to sign autographs and pose for photos with fans.  Saturday morning, they were at Paladar Latin Kitchen at the Annapolis Towne Centre doing the thing that the three time championship team does when management began to rearrange tables to accommodate a large party. Expecting to interact with some more fans who wanted to see the trophy and the team, they were a little surprised to see the Charlotte Hounds come in for their team brunch. Awkward! And, I am sure both teams are having a chuckle about it today now that the season is over!

The Game

The Bayhawks have struggled all season long. They are still the winningest Major League Lacrosse team and were hoping to “three-peat” their world championship this year; but just could not pull it off with a season record of 5-9 and a 19-13 routing of the Charlotte Hounds. The team came together last night and truly looked like the world champion team they are; but it was a little too late for 2014 as the trophy was packed up and scheduled to be shipped out.

Navy Stadium Pano

After the game, Coach Dave Cottle was upbeat, yet disappointed at the season record.  “I thought the guys played with great energy, I thought they played with great unity, and I thought they showed that they are professionals. This is the top level of the sport and our guys showed that they were on top of their game tonight.”

Midfielder Ben Hunt was responsible for 4 of the team’s 19 goals (a season high), “I was really proud of how we played tonight. It’s been a tough season, but we wanted to finish on a positive note. Tonight, we finally played like a championship team and that is something to build on.”

With the iff-season and the draft coming up, the Bayhawks are looking forward to finding some new talent, strengthening the existing stable of talent and coming back in April 2015 to reclaim the championship next season.

The Car

2014-08-09 20.17.41-2While the Bayhawks left Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium disappointed, one of the 6,322 fans did not. Jeffrey Newman of Catonsville drove home in a brand new Lexus ES 350 courtesy of the Chesapeake Bayhawks and Sheehy Lexus.  The Bayhawks had run a promotion all season long for season ticket holders. Each season ticket was an entry for a 2-year lease on a new Lexus.

At halftime, Sheehy Lexus General Manager, Paul LaRochelle and Bayhawks Owner, Brendan Kelly drew Newman’s name.  After a brief moment, Neuman burst on the field and congratulations were shared and high-fives given as he got a seat in his brand new car!  Newman has been a season ticket holder for the past three years and exclaimed as he beamed off the field, “you know I will be back again.”
