Baysox 2013IMG_9949Despite being doubled up by Altoona in the hit column, the Baysox escaped an error-filled night with a 5-4 win over the Curve to keep their playoff hopes alive. An Akron 14-4 loss to Erie coupled with a Bowie win means the Baysox now trail the RubberDucks for the final playoff spot by two games with three to play.

The Baysox coughed up a four-run lead in the top of the eighth inning only to retake the lead on a Buck Britton solo homer in the eighth before nearly surrendering the lead again in the ninth. The teams combined for six errors in the game, but the final Baysox error in the ninth was nearly the most costly as a Sharlon Schoop throwing error allowed Drew Maggi to turn an infield single into a triple. Despite the lead off batter reaching third base, relievers Steven Hensley and Julio DePaula were able to strike out a pair of batters and induce a groundout to third base to seal the victory.

The Baysox jumped out to an early lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the second inning against Altoona starter Zack Dodson. Garabez Rosa hit a two-out single to center field and moved to second base after a fielding error on Keon Broxton. Chris Marrero followed with an RBI triple to left field and he scored on a Ronald Bermudez single to left field to give Bowie a 2-0 lead.

Bowie added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. K.D. Kang hit a lead off single to left field and Rosa then reached on a fielding error by second baseman Dan Gamache. With one out, Bermudez brought Kang home with a single to right field and Rosa then scored on a wild pitch to give the Baysox a 4-0 lead.

Altoona came storming back to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning against Baysox reliever Marcel Prado. With one out, Broxton was hit by a pitch and scored on a Stetson Allie single to center field and fielding error by Mike Yastrzemski. Ramon Cabrera followed with a double to left field that moved Allie to third base where he scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Andy Vasquez singled to center field to plate Cabrera and Hensley then replaced Prado on the mound. Following the change, Kelson Brown tripled to center field to bring home the fourth run of the inning and tie the game 4-4.

Britton gave the Baysox the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to right field against Altoona reliever Matt Nevarez to make the score 5-4.

Baysox starter Nick Additon threw seven shutout innings, allowing seven hits and striking out five while walking three in a no decision. Prado pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed four runs on three hits and a hit batter while striking out one. Hensley pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed two hits while striking out two. DePaula recorded the final two outs to earn his third save of the season.

Nevarez took the loss for Altoona, pitching one inning and allowing one run on one hit.

RHP Branden Kline (0-2, 9.31) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team plays the second game in a four-game home series against the Altoona Curve. He will be opposed by RHP Angel Sanchez (0-2, 5.06).

The Baysox are home through Labor Day Monday, Sep. 1 for the final four-game homestand of the season. Promotional Highlights include Kids Appreciation Day with mini bat giveaway Saturday at 6:35 p.m. and Fan Appreciation Day with knit beanie cap Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
