$27K reward for info in Exxon clerk’s murder

On Thursday, August 7, 2014, at about 1:35 a.m., Anne Arundel County Police received a 911 call from a customer of the Exxon gas station located at 7898 Ridge Road in Hanover in reference to the clerk being found injured/unconscious. Responding police officers and fire/EMS personnel responded and determined the clerk was deceased, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Surveillance video at the scene shows a male suspect entering the Exxon station and confronting the clerk shortly after 1 a.m. The suspect shoots the clerk, takes an undetermined amount of cash from behind the counter and flees on foot in an unknown direction. The suspect is described as an African American male, unknown age, with an average build, wearing a dark hooded sweat shirt, tan or light-colored shorts and armed with a handgun. The victim has been identified as Rajinder Kumar, 49, of Glen Burnie, Maryland. Next of kin has been notified. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the Anne Arundel County Police Department at 410-222-8610 or Metro Crime Stoppers.

UPDATE #1: The Anne Arundel County Police Department is releasing surveillance footage of the suspect from the incident along with a vehicle, described as a dark-colored Range Rover with occupant(s) that may have been witnesses to the homicide. UPDATE #2: The occupants of the Range Rover were identified. The lookout for that vehicle is cancelled. It was never considered a suspect, only a possible witness vehicle.

UPDATE #3: The Anne Arundel County Police Department has partnered with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as we continue to search for information related to the murder of Rajinder Kumar. The FBI is now offering a reward of up to $20,000 for the identification of the Exxon Shooter in Hanover, MD. In addition, The Anne Arundel County Muslim Council has contributed an additional $5,000 to that fund. Metro Crime Stoppers is offering up to $2,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of a suspect in this murder. The total reward is now up to $27,000 for information leading to the ARREST and INDICTMENT of the suspect in Mr. Kumar’s slaying. “This is a cold-blooded killer who is living freely amongst his friends and family as we speak,” said Chief of Police Kevin Davis. “Our detectives have worked and will continue to work tirelessly to get this killer off of the streets, but his friends and family need to know, if they harbor or assist him in any way, they will be held accountable.” “We know we’re asking someone who knows the shooter to come forward and that’s not an easy thing to do. But an innocent man was shot and killed for no reason,” said Special Agent in Charge of the Baltimore Division of the FBI. “We have to find this robber before he robs another store, and puts more lives in danger.” Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Anne Arundel County Police homicide detectives at 410-222-8610.
