Vasquez stymies Ducks

Baysox 2013IMG_9950Anthony Vasquez was outstanding in seven strong innings and the Baysox bats came to life late in a 7-1 win on Saturday evening in Akron. With the win the Baysox have moved within a game of Akron in the standings going into Sunday’s series finale.

Vasquez was pitted in an early pitcher’s duel with Akron starter Will Roberts. Each starter ran through the lineup quickly a first time through. Bowie went to work with one down in the fourth inning. 3B Niuman Romero singled sharply off the glove of the pitcher Roberts. 1B Christian Walker then walked and CF Dariel Alvarez singled home Romero to break the scoreless tie. DH KD Kang’s sacrifice fly scored Walker later in the inning to pad the Baysox lead making it 2-0.

The duo of LF Johnny Ruettiger and SS Garabez Rosa would wreak havoc the rest of the way. They had consecutive hits in the fifth, seventh and ninth innings to bring home runs.

Up 5-1 in the eighth inning the Baysox went to the bullpen to get reliever Julio DePaula with two men on and no outs. After a wild pitch moved runners to second and third base, DePaula struck out consecutive batters before getting a groundout to end the frame.

Bowie got home runs from Walker in the eighth and Rosa in the ninth to finish the scoring. For Walker it was his 20th of the season. Rosa registered a three-hit night and the home run was number seven. Ruettiger also had a third three-hit game this week.

With a chance to sweep Akron, LHP Tim Berry takes the mound Sunday, April 6th at 2:05 p.m. Coverage begins 20-minutes prior to first pitch on wnav.com.

The Baysox return for a big four-game series against Richmond starting Friday, July 11th at 6:35 p.m.  For tickets contact the Baysox at 301-464-4865 or order online at baysox.com.
