Treaty of Paris Festival scheduled for September

| July 17, 2014, 01:12 PM | 0 Comments

The Annapolis Community Foundation’s Center for the Study of the Treaty of Paris Period (1783-87) is proud to announce the first Treaty of Paris Festival in the long history of Annapolis, where the Treaty of Paris was ratified. The festival’s theme is “Re-Discovering the Treaty of Paris Period.” The festival will take place on Saturday, September 6, 2014 and will feature a series of meals, lectures, films and walking tours highlighting the brief but “forgotten” era betwee n the Revolution and the Constitution, when there was neither a war going on nor a convention tasked with writing a new document to govern by—a time when Congress was unicameral, it had its own presidents (14 before George Washington) and Annapolis served as the first peacetime capital.

The lectures, films and walking tours will focus on the signing of the Treaty of Paris as well as its ratification, George Washington’s resignation from the Army, the appointment of Thomas Jefferson to France, the meetings between Maryland and Virginia over the use of the Potomac River, Shays’ Rebellion and the 1786 Annapolis Convention that issued the call for a Constitutional Convention, including a re-enactment of the 1786 Annapolis Convention as the Grand Finale and a special activity for children. As an added treat, from 11:00am – 1:00am, participating restaurants will serve as Honorary Mann’s Taverns, offering food and drink specials in rotating 2-hour time slots.

If you, your friends, your children or your students ever wanted to re-discover the achievements of our nation’s pre-Constitutional form of government—the First American Republic—then this is the festival for you! Below is a general summary of the itinerary:
