Police make arrests in December’s murder in Odenton

MurderAnne Arundel County police have announced the arrest of two individuals in connection with the murder of Shar-Ron Charles Mason who was shot and killed on December 10, 2013 in his home in Odenton, Maryland.

At the time witnesses described a black male in his mid 20s wearing a blue coat and jeans running from the scene. In 2013 the community of Chapelgate experienced several incidents of violence.

This afternoon chief Kevin Davis of the Anne Arundel County Police Department; Anne Colt-Leitess, Anne Arundel County State’s Attorneyl  and Capt. Herb Hasenpusch, commander of the criminal investigations division announced the arrest near the scene of the murder. Members of Mason’s family were present at the press conference.

During the last several months, Anne Arundel County police homicide detectives continued efforts into bringing Mr. Mason’s killer to justice. Several search warrants have been obtained and executed in regards to this ongoing investigation over the past six months. As detectives conducted interviews and pieced together evidence, they were finally able to link two suspects to this crime.

According to Captain Hasenpusch police believe the motive for the killing was to silence Mason, who was involved as a State’s witness against the suspect in an unrelated altercation.

The investigation revealed Mr. Mason Bashunn Phillips were known to each other. In October 2013, an issue developed where Bashunn Phillips and Mr. Mason were involved in altercation. As a result of the altercation, Bashunn Phillips was charged and was awaiting a court date. The murder of Mr. Mason occurred with weeks before the case was supposed to go to trial. After the murder, evidence was obtained in which Tymaine Phillips, Bashunn Phillips’ brother, attempted to secrete evidence from law enforcement authorities.

In working in conjunction with the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorneys Office, Detective Jack Hartzell presented testimony on Friday, July 18, 2014, to the Anne Arundel County grand jury. At the conclusion of his testimony the Anne Arundel County grand jury secured arrest warrants for the brothers involved in the murder of Mr. Mason.

Bashunn Phillips, 20, was charged with 1st degree murder, 2nd degree murder, manslaughter, use of a firearm in a felony, use of a firearm in commission of a crime of violence, and carrying a handgun.

Tymaine Phillips, 17 and charged as an adult, was charged with carrying a handgun, and as an accessory to murder after the fact.

On the 18th at approximately 3 PM and on the County police took Tymaine into custody without incident in the 2600 block of Chapel Lake Drive in Gambrills. Bashunn Philips was incarcerated at the Ordinance Road Detention Center. Detectives responded to the facility and took custody of Bashunn Phillips and served him with the arrest warrant.

“These arrests send a strong message that our police department is committed to bringing violent criminals to justice,” said Anne Arundel County police chief Kevin Davis. “Our detectives worked relentlessly on this case, and while there is more work to be done in that community, we want the residents of Chapelgate who were shaken by this crime to know that their department is invested in the safety of our community.”

Anne Colt-Leitess spoke briefly and lauded the police department for their work, the Grand Jury for their work and said her office looks forward to prosecuting the case in the coming months.
