Members of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department’s Fire/Arson Investigation Unit have determined that Monday’s fire in Brooklyn Park was incendiary and intentional in nature.

On July, 14th, around 7:00 a.m., Fire Investigators responded to assist firefighters at a dwelling fire in the unit block of Ballman Court. Firefighters had been alerted to the fire just after 6:30 and brought a basement fire under control with 28 firefighters in approximately 25 minutes. As a result of the fire, a 22 year old male burn patient had been sent John Hopkins Burn Center, three occupants were displaced and $38,000 damage was done to the structure and contents.

During the course of their investigation, Fire Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be incendiary and intentional in nature. Fire Investigators quickly identified a suspect and he was detained at the scene for further investigation. During the course of investigation, the suspect admitted to starting the fire with the intent of injuring the victim.

The suspect, Xavien Neal Pinkney, 23, of Brooklyn Park was subsequently arrested and charged with: attempted first degree murder, arson first degree, malicious burning first degree (two counts), malicious burning second degree, reckless endangerment (two counts) and destruction of property.

The suspect remains in custody at the Jennifer Road Detention Center on a No Bond Status.

Original Fire

Brooklyn Park FireA 22 year old male has been transported to the John Hopkins Burn Center following a single alarm dwelling fire in Brooklyn Park this morning. Just after 6:30 units were dispatched for smoke from a dwelling in the unit block of Ballman Court. An engine company clearing a medical call in the same area arrived on location just after the initial dispatch, reporting smoke showing from a middle of the group row home. A basement fire was discovered and brought under control by 28 firefighters in approximately 25 minutes.

While units were on location of the fire, Anne Arundel Fire Communications was notified that a burn patient from the fire had evacuated the house and relocated to the Sav-A-Lot in the 5000 block of Ritchie Highway North. Medical units responded to that location and the patient, a 22 year old male, was transported to the John Hopkins Burn Center with first and second degree burns to his arms and back.

Anne Arundel County Fire Investigators responded to the scene of the fire and to the Burn Center to interview the patient. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
