Big inning boosts Baysox

Baysox 2013IMG_9937The Baysox (54-51) scored six runs in an error-aided second inning to take a big lead over the Altoona Curve (41-65) in a 9-1 win Thursday night.

Baysox starter Zach Davies also had a nice outing, throwing seven innings and allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven and walking one in the win.

The Baysox stormed into the lead in the bottom of the second inning against Altoona starter Jhonathan Ramos. The Baysox send 10 batters to the plate in the inning to take a 6-0 lead on six hits. The final five runs scored were unearned after a pair of Altoona errors that extended the inning. Glynn Davis hit a two-RBI double to left-center field that sparked the two-out rally.

Bowie added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Davis hit a one out double to center field and moved to third base on a wild pitch before scoring on a Niuman Romero sacrifice fly to give the Baysox a 7-0 lead.

Ronald Bermudez led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run to center field to give the Baysox an 8-0 lead.

The Curve got on the board in the top of the seventh inning against Davies. Dan Gamache hit a one out double to left field and Elias Diaz followed with a double to left field to plate Gamache and make the score 8-1.

The Baysox got the run right back in the bottom half of the inning against Altoona reliever Matt Benedict. Michael Ohlman hit a lead off single to center field and scored on a Sharlon Schoop double to left field to give Bowie a 9-1 lead.

Reliever Jason Gurka pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Baysox, walking one batter. Julio DePaula pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game.

Ramos took the loss for Altoona, throwing five innings and allowing eight runs (three earned) on nine hits while walking two.

LHP Tim Berry (5-5, 3.65) takes the mound for the Baysox Friday as the team plays the second game in a four game home series with the Altoona Curve. He will be opposed by LHP Thomas Harlan (0-1, 3.60).

The Baysox are home through Sunday, July 27 for a seven-game homestand that includes games against the Harrisburg Senators and Altoona Curve. Promotional highlights include Daddy/Daughter Date Night Friday, July 25 at 6:35 p.m. and Superhero Night Saturday, July 26 at 6:35 p.m.
