Baysox hang on for tight win

Baysox ImageAfter late rallies by Harrisburg the past two nights, the Baysox were able to hang on to the lead in a 6-4 win over the Senators Wednesday afternoon to avoid a three-game sweep. All three game in the series were decided by two runs or less.

The Baysox got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning against Harrisburg starter John Simms. David Adams hit a lead off double to left field and scored on a Garabez Rosa two-out single to center field to give Bowie a 1-0 lead.

Michael Taylor tied the game for Harrisburg in the top of the third inning with a lead off solo home run to right field against Baysox starter Anthony Vasquez.

The Senators took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Taylor drew a lead off walk and went to third base on a one-out single to right field from Matt Skole. Kevin Keyes brought Taylor home with a single to left field to give Harrisburg a 2-1 lead.

Bowie got the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning. Niuman Romero hit a one-out single to right field and moved to second base on a K.D. Kang groundout. Michael Burgess then doubled to left field for his first hit with the Baysox to bring Romero home. Adams followed with a double to right field that plated Burgess to give the Baysox a 3-2 lead. Harrisburg reliever Colin Bates replaced Simms on the mound to finish the inning.

The Baysox extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rosa drew a one-out walk and Mike Yastrzemski followed with a double to left field. Both runners scored on a Romero single to center field and Kang then singled to right field to move Romero to third base. Adams brought Romero home with a two-out single to center field to give the Baysox a 6-2 lead.

Harrisburg cut into the Baysox lead in the top of the seventh inning against Baysox reliever Mychal Givens. Givens walked three batters to load the bases with one out and then allowed a run to score on a wild pitch. He then hit Jason Martinson to load the bases again before Marcel Prado replaced Givens on the mound. A Drew Vettleson sacrifice fly scored the second Senators run of the inning to make the score 6-4.

Vasquez pitched six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking two in the win. Givens pitched one-third of an inning and allowed two runs on three walks while striking out one batter. Prado pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing two hits. Baysox reliever Steven Hensley picked up his fourth win of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth inning and allowing one hit while striking out one.

Simms took the loss for Harrisburg, throwing four and two-thirds innings and allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking one.

RHP Zach Davies (5-6, 3.78) takes the mound for the Baysox Thursday as the team opens a four game home series with the Altoona Curve. He will be opposed by LHP Brian Jhonathan Ramos (2-3, 5.34).
