Davies deals and Baysox hang on

Baysox 2013IMG_9949The Baysox got six solid innings from right-handed starter Zach Davies and held off a late Trenton rally to win the series opener 3-2 at Arm and Hammer Park.

Davies allowed the leadoff batter of the night to single, but he would allow only one more hit. That initial runner was stranded at third base but no other Thunder baserunner reached scoring position with Davies atop the hill.

The Baysox offense went to work early. Three consecutive singles was highlighted by 1B Christian Walker’s chopper into left field that brought home a run to put Bowie atop, 1-0. Walker would drive home a second run later in the game. His 61 RBI’s lead the Eastern League.

Bowie continued to threatened but could only break through one more time. They did so in the fifth inning with three consecutive singles again from 3N Niumand Romero, LF Nolan Reimold and Walker. Reimold scored a second run in the inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of CF Dariel Alvarez.

Trenton did not go lightly late though. In the ninth inning two reached base against LHP Anthony Vasquez who had worked two scoreless innings previously. In came Baysox closer Oliver Drake. Drake struck out a batter but then allowed a walk and a 2-RBI single by Thunder RF Tyler Austin.

With the tying runner in scoring position he got a fly ball out and a popout to end the game. The save is a league leading 14th for Drake.

The series continues on Tuesday, June 17th at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Tyler Wilson shoots for a team-leading eighth win of the year. Coverage begins 20-minutes prior on wnav.com.

Bowie will soon be home for a six game homestand beginning Friday, June 20th at 6:35 p.m. against Binghamton. Fireworks will follow Fort Meade Night presented by USAA Insurance. For tickets contact the Baysox at 301-464-4865 or order online at baysox.com.
