Opera with a Twist” Fall Concert @ Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis

Saturday Oct 26, 2014 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

“Opera with a Twist” will feature solos and ensembles from the operatic repertoire that display facets of love gone awry—misplaced love, misunderstood love, misguided love, and love on the rocks.   The theme derives from the plot of Così fan tutte; to celebrate the occasion, cocktails, some with the proverbial twist, will be available during intermission.  The concert will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis on Sunday, October 26, at 3:00 p.m.  Maestro Ron Gretz will narrate the performance.

Mostly Mozart” Winter Concert @ Calvary United Methodist Church

Saturday Dec 14, 2014 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Our winter concert, “Mostly Mozart,” will include arias and ensembles drawn from the operas of Mozart and his peers.  Mozart is regarded by many aficionados as the ultimate composer of opera because he wrote music in every operatic genre current during his lifetime.  Musical scholars assert that he produced the defining masterpiece in each of those dramatic forms.   This concert will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church of Annapolis on Sunday, December 14, at 3:00 p.m., and will include a reception where the audience will be invited to meet the performers.  Once again, Maestro Gretz will narrate.

Hansel and Gretel” Children’s Opera @ Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts

Saturday Jan 31, 2015 @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am

This production is a 50–minute condensation of Humperdinck’s immortal opera Hansel and Gretel. The plot thread of the original is maintained, the main cuts coming in the choruses, the ballet sequences, and the music for the parents. The production is fully costumed, and presented on a unique revolving set which changes quickly from a domestic interior to a deep forest, and on to the gingerbread house of the witch. The presentation is framed by a brief introduction beforehand and a question-and-answer session afterwards, in which the audience gets to interact directly with the performers.

Così fan tutte” @ Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts

Friday Mar 13, 2015 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Sunday Mar 15, 2015 @ 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm

This season’s main event is a fully-staged production with sets, costumes, and orchestra of the Mozart masterpiece, Così fan tutte, a comic tale of love tested by deception and seduction.   The title, literally translated, “thus do they all” suggests that women are easily seduced and quick to fly from the arms of one love to another.  The opera was a great success in its day, but for most of the 19th through the first half of the 20th century, its subject matter was deemed too racy for public consumption.   Since that time, it has returned to the standard repertoire and, according to recent tabulations, is the 14th most popular opera being performed today. Così fan tutte will take place in Maryland Hall on Friday, March 13, at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 15, at 3:00 p.m.
