Vasquez strong but Baysox fall

Baysox 2013IMG_9930The Baysox could not take advantage of a strong start from newcomer Anthony Vasquez as Bowie dropped the opener of a three-game series in Altoona 6-1.

Vasquez was strong in his Eastern league debut. The left-handed pitcher who reached the major leagues in 2011 with Seattle was sharp in his first start in Bowie. Vasquez mixed speeds and worked inside and out to strike out seven batters in six innings. He allowed only an unearned run.

The Baysox could not get their offense going against tough spot starter AJ Morris for Altoona. Morris, who had not allowed a run since April 11th, allowed a leadoff single to SS Niuman Romero to open the game. He then retired the next 16 batters. Morris (2-0) got the win with six shutout innings of work.

Altoona opened the game up with small ball in the seventh inning. 3B Dave Maggi hit a sharp infield single off of Romero’s glove at short. He stole second base and then scored when 2B Gift Ngoepe put down a bunt near the third base line. 3B Garabez Rosa fielded but through wildly. It was ruled a single and an error.

Ngoepe got second base on another bunt single, this time off of the bat of SS Alen Hanson. Later in the inning both runners would score on a two-RBI single from CF Mel Rojas Jr. Altoona led 4-0.

Bowie scored in the top of the eighth inning as LF johnny Ruettiger grounded into a force play with the bases loaded to score a run. Runners remained at the corners with two men retired by Romero flied out to snuff out the rally.

CF Dariel Alvarez had his Eastern league leading 11-game hit streak  come to an end with an 0-for-4 night. Alvarez still has hits in 26-of-28 games this season. 1B Christian Walker had the lone multi-hit night for Bowie going 2-for-4. The Baysox will face big league rehabber Wandy Rodriguez on Tuesday night. The Pirates lefty is coming back from a knee injury. With the loss the Baysox are now back to .500 at 15-15.

The Baysox continue their series in Altoona on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. Teal leader in wins, Tyler Wilson gets the start looking for his fifth victory of the season. Coverage begins 20-minutes before first pitch on wnav.com.

The Baysox return home Thursday, May 8th for a four-game series with the New Britain Rock Cats. Friday, May 8th and Saturday, May 9th, fireworks will follow the games! For tickets contact the Baysox at 301-805-6000 or visit online at baysox.com.
