Baysox May 2014For the second straight night, the Baysox offense could get nothing going against the Richmond Flying Squirrels pitching staff in a 4-1 loss Saturday night. A night after scoring two runs on seven hits in the loss, the Baysox scored one run on four hits in another loss.

Richmond jumped out to another early 3-0 lead and the Baysox were never able to recover. The top of the Richmond lineup did most of the damage on offense with the first three batters combining for three runs, seven hits and four RBI.

The Flying Squirrels struck first in the top of the first inning against Baysox starter Tim Berry. Tyler Graham hit a lead off single to left field and stole second base. He moved to third base on a Kelby Tomlinson groundout and scored on a Matt Duffy sacrifice fly to give Richmond the lead.

Richmond added to the lead in the top of the third inning. Tyler LaTorre hit a lead off single to second base and moved to second base after a throwing error by David Adams. Graham brought LaTorre home with a double to left field but was later caught stealing third base. Kelby Tomlinson followed with a two-out double to left field and he scored on a Duffy single to center field to make the score 3-0.

Dariel Alvarez put the Baysox on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo homer to center field off Richmond reliever Hunter Strickland. The Baysox loaded the bases later in the inning, but could not score any more runs.

The Flying Squirrels got the run right back in the top of the eighth inning against Baysox reliever Anthony Vasquez. Graham hit a one-out double to right field and scored on a Tomlinson single to right field to give Richmond a 4-1 lead.

Berry pitched seven innings and allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out five in the loss. Vasquez pitched the final two innings for the Baysox and allowed one run on two hits while striking out one and walking one.

Richmond starter Austin Fleet picked up the win, pitching six scoreless innings and allowing two hits while striking out four and walking three. Fleet carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning against the Baysox.

LHP Jake Pettit (4-3, 5.77) takes the mound for the Baysox Sunday as the team plays the final game in a three game home series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. He will be opposed by RHP Kyle Crick (2-1, 4.08).

The Baysox are home through Sunday, June 1 for a six game homestand against the Akron RubberDucks and Richmond Flying Squirrels that concludes with the Aces & Bases Learn to Play Tennis event. After an off day Monday, the Baysox depart for New Hampshire Tuesday, June 3.
