Pettit, Walker, lead the way for Baysox

Baysox May 2014The Baysox won their fourth consecutive game behind a two-run home run from 1B Christian Walker and a strong start from LHP Jake Pettit in taking the series opener in Reading, 5-3.

For Walker the night was a homecoming. From just 30 minutes away from Reading, PA he went 3-for-5 with the home run that doubled the lead for Bowie in the eighth inning. The drive was the ninth of the year for Walker and the seventh home run with at least one runner on base.

The insurance runs added to the advantage after the strong start from Pettit. The third year Baysox starter allowed just one run on four hits in six strong innings. He picked up the win (2-3) which was his 20th in his Baysox career. He is only the seventh pitcher all-time to win 20 games or more with Bowie in the 22-year history of the franchise.

Reading battled back late. Fightins 1B Brock Stassi hit a two-run home run off the top of the right-center field wall to cut the Baysox lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Bowie brough on closer Oliver Drake who retired the first two batters in the inning quickly. SS Edgar Duran then doubled and 3B Carlos Alonso walked. A passed ball followed and runners were at second and third base in a two-run game. Drake settled down and struck out 2B Andrew Cartwright to end the game. It was his eighth save of the year.

The series continues Saturday, May 17th in Reading at 6:35 p.m. with LHP Anthony Vasquez getting the call. Coverage begins 20-minutes before first pitch on wnav.com.
