Pair arrested for impersonating a charity in Glen Burnie

On May 30, 2014 at approximately 6:45 p.m., officers responded to the parking lot of the Giant Foods in the 7900 block of Crain Highway Glen Burnie, MD for a report of a suspicious person.

Upon their arrival, they met with the reporting person who was concerned about a recent donation he just made to a group collecting for the “Support our Troops Foundation”.  After making a donation to a man and a woman purportedly collecting funds for the charity on the lot of the Giant Foods, the reporting person asked for and was given a flier about the group.  He called a number on the flier and he heard a cellphone in one of the collector’s pocket to start ringing. The reporting person believed this to be suspicious and he notified the police.

Investigating officers first made contact with a female and learned that the male she was with had fled the area with the collection jar.  A search of the area was made and the male was located, however, the collection jar was not.

Officers were able to locate a number for the actual “Support Our Troops Foundation” and after speaking with representatives from the group, they were able to determine that neither of these two people represented nor were they authorized to make collections on behalf of the foundation.

The suspects were taken into custody and transported for processing. A quantity of U.S. currency was also seized as evidence.  It was learned during interview that the suspects have done this before. In addition, based on the investigation and interviews, the suspects were committing this fraud to fuel a drug habit.

Any person having contact with the suspects are urged to contact the Anne Arundel County Police Department at (410)-222-6145.
