Before a crowd of nearly 7,000, the back-to-back championship winning Chesapeake Bayhawks defeated their arch rival the Long Island Lizards in overtime by a score of 12-11 last night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Newly acquired, Stephen Peyser netted the game-winner against his former team to give the defending champions their first win of the season.

New York found the back of the net first with Steven Mock in the opening minutes of the game. The Bayhawks responded with three consecutive tallies, including a two-pointer by Mike Kimmel and goals by Jesse Bernhardt and Peyser before Rob Pannell’s first goal of the game.

The Lizards, down 4-2 at the beginning of the second, scored first again with a Kyle Hartzell solo effort. But the defending champions again would find the net three times increasing their score to 7-3. Another goal by Mock and two by Brendan Mundorf would end the half with the home team leading 9-4.

The third quarter saw great play from both defenses as the teams were unable to score more than one tally each. First Greg Gurenlian scored a short-handed goal on the opening faceoff, then, midway through the quarter, Matt Mackrides evened it out with a goal of his own.

The Lizards mounted their comeback in the fourth quarter, recording five unanswered goals to tie the game with just over two minutes left in regulation, two by Max Seibald, two by Matt Striebel and one from Pannell. Attackman Ned Crotty, making his debut for the Lizards, gave the visitors hope of winning the game with a goal at the 13:36 mark. The Lizards, however were not able to hold on to the advantage as Mackrides tied the game with 30 seconds left to force overtime.

One minute and thirty seconds into the extra period, the Bayhawks would earn their first win of 2014 thanks to the unassisted tally by Peyser who went on to be named Coca-Cola Player of the Game.

Both teams return to action on national television next week with the Lizards visiting the Rochester Rattlers on Friday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m., and the Bayhawks traveling to face the Charlotte Hounds on Saturday, May 10 at 3:30 p.m. in a rematch of the 2013 MLL Championship game. Both games will be carried live on CBS Sports Network.
