Baysox sneak past Seawolves

Baysox 2013IMG_9937Dariel Alvarez gave the Baysox their first lead of the night with a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh on the way to a 6-5 win over the Erie SeaWolves Friday night. The Baysox had trailed since the top of the fourth inning, but used a four-run seventh inning to take the lead.

Erie scored first in the top of the fourth inning against Baysox starter Tim Berry. Eugenio Suarez drew a lead off walk, stole second and third base and scored on a throwing error by catcher Michael Ohlman. Wade Gaynor then hit a one-out infield single and scored on a double to left field by Ramon Cabrera to give the SeaWolves a 2-0 lead.

The Baysox got one run back in the bottom half of the inning against Erie starter Wilsen Palacios. Christian Walker drew a one-out walked and moved to third base after a two-out ground rule double to center field from Chih-Hsien Chiang. Walker scored after a strikeout + wild pitch with Garabez Rosa batting to make the score 2-1.

Bowie tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brian Ward hit a lead off double to right field, moved to third base on a Johnny Ruettiger sacrifice bunt and scored on a Buck Britton single up the middle.

The SeaWolves took the lead right back in the top of the sixth inning. Suarez hit a lead off single to left field and Gaynor followed with a one-out right field home run to make the score 4-2.

The Baysox took their first lead of the night in the bottom of the seventh. Ward drew a lead off walk and Will Startup then replaced Palacios on the mound. Ruettiger singled into shallow left field and Britton moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Niuman Romero plated both runners with a single to right field and with two outs, Alvarez homered to left field to give Bowie a 6-4 lead.

Cabrera made the Baysox nervous in the top of the ninth inning with a lead off home run to left field off Baysox closer Oliver Drake to make the score 6-5. Drake retired the next three batters to end the game.

Berry pitched six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking one in the no decision. Baysox reliever Jason Gurka picked up the win, pitching two perfect innings and striking out two batters. Drake picked up the save, pitching the ninth inning and allowing one run on one hit while striking out two batters.

Startup took the loss for Erie, pitching two innings and allowing three runs on three hits.

RHP Matt Bischoff (1-1, 3.79) takes the mound for the Baysox Saturday as the team plays the second game in a three game home series with the Erie SeaWolves. He will be opposed by RHP Jeff Ferrell (1-2, 6.14).

The Baysox are home through Sunday, May 4 for a three game home series against the Erie SeaWolves. Promotional Highlights include Fireworks Saturday, May 3 after the 6:35 p.m. game and Bark in the Park Day Sunday, May 4 beginning at 2:05 p.m.
