The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD is offering a two-day relief carving class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15 with craftsman John Garlick. Basic tools and materials will be provided, with participation limited and advanced registration needed.

Each participant will create a pineapple wall piece, with Garlick teaching the techniques and artistry of relief carving while students develop the concepts and skills needed to complete the project. The pineapple has symbolized hospitality since colonial times, when sea captains sailing the Caribbean Islands returned to the colonies with fruits, spices, and rum.

The cost for the weekend workshop is $85 for CBMM members and $100 for non-members. Children ages 12 and up are welcome to register with an adult chaperone. Pre-registration is required by contacting CBMM’s Boatyard Program Manager Jenn Kuhn at 410-745-4980 or by emailing [email protected]. For more information, visit www.cbmm.org.
