Annapolis Opera Idol coming in May

idolThe Annapolis area’s own version of American Idol takes place on the weekend of May 3 and 4, 2014, in Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts at Annapolis Opera’s 25th Anniversary Vocal Competition. It’s a unique opportunity to hear some of the Mid-Atlantic region’s finest opera stars of the future and it’s FREE, thanks to sponsorship by the Helena Foundation (James and Sylvia Earl).

You can spend all or part of Saturday (10:00 am to 4:30pm) listening to 27 semi-finalists (selected from a pool of over 80 entrants!) compete for one of the 8 finalist spots and see if your picks match the judges’, then come back on Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm to hear the finalists compete for prizes from $600 to $3,000. And you can again match wits with the judges and vote your favorite for the $500 Audience Choice Award!

“Annapolis Opera’s Vocal Competition is eagerly anticipated by outstanding young singers in the mid-Atlantic region,” says Leah Solat, Chair of this year’s competition. “Finalists often go on to successful professional careers,” she added, “so Annapolis audiences have the opportunity to see the opera stars of tomorrow early in their careers.”

“Opera is expensive to produce and tickets to opera events are costly,” said Lee Finney, president of Annapolis Opera. “That means many people never experience opera live. This free concert, thanks to the generosity of the Helena Foundation, is a great way for everyone to experience the joy of hearing wonderful singers perform some of the greatest music ever written.”
