Recycling cart program surpasses 100,000

CartThe Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works, Bureau of Waste Management Services recently exceeded 100,000 deliveries of the 65 gallon recycling cart and anticipates meeting the countywide distribution goal by September 2014.  The original distribution was scheduled to be complete in December 2014.

“We are committed to providing our citizens the resources needed to make recycling in Anne Arundel County as simple, convenient and easy as possible,” said County Executive Laura Neuman.  “These larger, easy-to-use recycling carts have a positive impact on our curbside recycling rate.  Accelerating the roll-out schedule will satisfy citizen demand and save taxpayer money by extending the life of our landfill.”

The 65 Gallon Recycling Cart Program began as a pilot program in 2010 with small scale distributions.  Results of the pilot program determined that providing customer a more convenient cart with increased capacity would have a positive impact on the curbside recycling rate.  Since 2010, the curbside recycling rate has increased from 39% to 44%.

While full distribution will be complete in September, exact schedules for remaining deliveries have not been finalized.  Customers will receive notice in the mail several weeks prior to distribution in their neighborhood informing them of their specific delivery date.  This letter also provides customers the opportunity to accept or decline the cart.
