McBride Gallery presents their first solo show for Maryland artist Hiu Lai Chong. The show, “Memorable Moments” opens to the public with a reception on March 16, from 1 – 4 pm. The Artist Talk is at 2:00pm. Hiu Lai Chong paints marine and city scenes, especially around the Chesapeake Bay, also still life and the figure preferring vivid colors and sensitive brush strokes to express mood and feeling in her work.
An accomplished plein air and studio oil painter, Hiu Lai Chong, in a few short years has an impressive list of national shows and awards: Grand Prize at the Easton Plein Air, First Place for the Washington Society of Landscape Painters (twice), Best of Show in Paint Annapolis, Frederick, Ellicott City, and Cumberland (twice).
Road to Success as a Painter
Hiu Lai Chong emigrated to the United States with a love of painting and some art training. She was determined to learn to become a good painter so while working a full time job in the evening, she earned BFA degree from The Art Institute of Chicago. Following a move to the East Coast she continued her art education at The Art League in Alexandria and searched out workshops as she could afford them, from some of the top artists in the country.
She is a member of the American Portrait Society, Oil Painters of America, The American Impressionist Society and the American Society of Marine Artists.
