Lighthouse overnight adventures in St. Michaels

CBMM Lighthouse
Kids ages 8-12 and their chaperones get the chance to spend the night in the 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse during the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s Lighthouse Overnight Adventures. The program is offered for groups in the spring and fall months, with advanced registration recommended. For more information, visit the “Learn” tab at www.cbmm.org.

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD is now accepting reservations for its spring Lighthouse Overnight Adventuresprogram. Under the guidance of a museum educator, youth groups and their chaperones can travel back in time to explore the life of a late 19th-century lighthouse keeper, all while spending the night in the historic 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse.

The adventure program is offered Fridays and Saturdays April through June, and again in the fall, with advanced reservations needed. Twelve to fifteen children and their chaperones can participate in the adventure program.

The program also shares the stories of the women-keepers who lived and worked in Chesapeake lighthouses. Designed to align with the Girl Scouts’Journeys program, the overnight adventure uses fun games, costumes, and historic object kits to explore the life of the famous Fannie Salter, keeper of the Chesapeake’s Turkey Point Lighthouse. The experience can be used toward earning badges for Brownie, Junior, and Cadette Girl Scouts, or just for fun among all groups and their chaperones.

Built in 1879, the screwpile cottage-style Hooper Strait Lighthouse once stood out in the Bay to light the way past Hooper Strait, nearly 39 miles south of St. Michaels. Slated for demolition in 1966, the museum purchased the lighthouse and moved it by barge to its current location. Open to the public since 1967, the lighthouse is now one of only three still in existence on the Chesapeake.

The cost is $40 per person, with a 12-person minimum, 18-person maximum. The fee includes one overnight stay in the lighthouse, a dedicated museum facilitator, the cost of program activities, two days admission to the museum, and a souvenir patch. Space is limited with early, registration recommended by contacting CBMM’s Director of Education Kate Livie at [email protected] or at 410-745-4947. For more information about the program, visit the “Learn” section at www.cbmm.org.
