What’s so special about March 29, 2014? For many of us, it’s just another day, but for homeless Anne Arundel County residents, it could be the day that changes their lives.
Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services will sponsor the seventh annual Homeless Resource Day from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, March 29 at Annapolis High School, 2700 Riva Road, Annapolis. The purpose of this daylong event, initially developed by former County Executive John R. Leopold, is to connect homeless residents to resources and services available to them.
“We will pick up residents from wherever they are in Anne Arundel County – from off the street or from a shelter,” said Marcia Kennai, Director of the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services. “We want our homeless residents to know that we care about them and there are services available to help them.”
More than 325 volunteers have signed up to participate in the day’s events and to act as guides to escort participants to resources available; lunch for guests is being provided by the Lighthouse Shelter and prepared by previously homeless individuals who have been trained as food service workers.
“This is truly a labor of love for Homeless Resource Day volunteers, the Department of Social Services and partner organizations,” said County Executive Laura Neuman. “They are selflessly donating their time, energy and services for this worthwhile cause.”
Throughout the year, schools have held sock drives, detention centers and hotels donated hygiene kits and the food bank prepares bags of food for homeless residents. In addition, doctors and nurses provide healthcare services and attorneys provide free legal counsel.
According to organizers of the event, the most popular offerings are free health screenings, identification cards provided by the Motor Vehicle Administration, a hearty lunch and free haircuts. “The things that our homeless are most excited about are the things that many of us take for granted,” said Ms. Kennai. “It’s the little things matter most and they go a long way in making a difference in someone’s life.”
