Schuh, McConkey Want Elected School Board, Introduce Legislation

School LogoDelegates Steve Schuh and Tony McConkey today co-sponsored legislation requiring members of the Anne Arundel County Board of Education to be elected by the voters.

“Our system of appointing school board members is antiquated and ineffective,” Schuh said. “The norm nationwide and in Maryland is to have elected school boards. It is undemocratic for the Governor to determine who represents our citizens on matters that have a direct effect on our childrens’ education, such as the curriculum and the budget. The School Board should be accountable to the voters of Anne Arundel County, not the Governor of Maryland.”

Delegate McConkey commented, “We have worked for many years to establish an elected School Board for Anne Arundel County. While we admire the dedication and professionalism of the members of the current Board, they should be accountable to parents, not a far away Governor.”

Only four jurisdictions, including Anne Arundel County, have appointed school boards, and there are 18 elected boards in Maryland. This legislation requires that five members of the Board be elected from the five state legislative districts and retains four appointed members. The Board of Education budget makes up more than 50 percent of the Anne Arundel County budget.
