UPDATE Annapolis Boat Fire

This morning’s boat fire at the Horn Point Harbor Marina destroyed two vessels and potentially damaged a third. The fire broke out onboard a 1984 40′ foot Seamaster2 and quickly spread to a neighboring 35 foot boat.

Firefighters from Annapolis city, Anne Arundel County, the United States Naval Academy, Queen Annes County, and Grasonville all responded to the incident.

The fire boat belonging to Annapolis had mechanical issues and was not able to deploy. Additionally the county fireboat located at Sandy Point was apparently unable to respond due to ice in the creek. Ultimately a fire boat from Queen Annes County was dispatched across the Chesapeake Bay to assist.

To compound the problems, fire crews discovered that the standpipe located on the pier, was inoperable which necessitated firefighters to stretch hand hose lines from the engines to the fire. According to Capt. Janet Keifler from the city’s fire marshal’s office, a citation will be issued and the standpipe will be repaired as soon as possible

At least one boat was a live-aboard; however the owners were not on board at the time the fire broke out. At least two people have been displaced.

While crews were fighting the fire, additional units from surrounding jurisdictions were placed in the cities three fire stations to ensure adequate fire protection during the incident.

Due to the extreme frigid temperatures, the city deployed one of the circulator shuttle buses to the scene to be used as a rehabilitation area for firefighters.

Any environmental impact is unknown at this point in time. The United States Coast Guard and the Department of Natural Resources have both responded and are evaluating the situation. Kiefler expects crews to remain on the scene for several hours and investigators for several more beyond that.

We will have more pictures later today.
