The environmental community will come together to celebrate the completion of a big stormwater retrofit project with a volunteer planting day on Friday, December 6, at 9 a.m.
The Spa Creek Conservancy will coordinate the volunteer planting day at the new parking lot at the site of the Rockfish Raw Bar & Grill, at Sixth Street and Severn Avenue. This project, which has been percolating for several years, is finally coming to an end and the Conservancy invites the community to plant and celebrate that the infiltration of stormwater on this site that will result in a cleaner, healthier Spa Creek.
The parking lot has been retrofitted with grant funding the Conservancy was awarded through the Maryland 2010 Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund. Parking lots in the Spa Creek watershed are large contributors to stormwater runoff into the Creek. This project will take care of most of the stormwater that falls on this property and some of which flows to it from areas uphill from it.
The rainwater will be absorbed and treated by the project’s new rain gardens, pervious concrete strips and conservation landscaping. Once treated by the new stormwater technologies, the cleaner, cooler stormwater will go where it’s meant to go – into our groundwater supply.
Hundreds of native perennials will be planted. Many volunteers — of all ages — are needed to join others already committed to help including employees of the EPA’s Chesapeake Bay Program Office, the County’s Watershed Stewards Academy, the Eastport Civic Association, students from Eastport Elementary and Spa Creek Conservancy volunteers.
