Today at 3:10pm under what looks to be snowing skies, the Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy and the Black Knights of the Unites States Military Academy will take to the football field for the 114th time. The game will be played at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia and aired live on CBS.
Navy leads the series in this famed game often dubbed “America’s Football Game” 57-49-7. Navy is also looking to take home an unprecedented 12th win against the Army Black Knights.
This year, the Midshipmen are at a slight disadvantage due to a quirk in the calendar. Instead of resting and getting prepared for the game, the team was in the midst of final exams at the Academy. However, according to the lines in Vegas, the Midshipmen are favored over Army by 12 points. In a poll on the Army-Navy Game website, with more than 2200 votes cast, 63% of the people expect to be singing the Blue & Gold last.
The coin toss will be done by Secretary of Defense Charles T. “Chuck” Hagel who will be using the silver dollar that JFK was to use 50 years ago. JFK was assassinated in Dallas just 8 days prior to the 1963 game. The coin was sent to the captain of the 1963 team, MIDN Thomas Lynch, by then Secretary of the Army, Cyrus Vance on behalf of the late President .
