Make A ‘Ditty Bag’ At CBMM

CBMM_SailorsDittyBag_Nov16The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD invites members of the public to create their own “Sailor’s Ditty Bag” from 9am to 4pm on Saturday, November 16 with CBMM’s Assistant Curator of Watercraft Richard Scofield. Space is limited, with pre-registration needed.

In making the bags, participants will incorporate all the primary skills needed to make and repair sails, while creating a keepsake to take home from the workshop. Traditionally, ditty bags hold the tools needed for the marlin spike arts, which is the art of splicing lines, knot-making, and hand work (sewing canvas). The general contents of the ditty bag vary, but most sailors use them to keep small tools, equipment, and personal items.

The cost is $65 for CBMM members or $85 for non-members, which includes all the materials needed in creating the ditty bag. Pre-registration is required by calling Boatyard Program Manager Jenn Kuhn at 410-745-4980 or [email protected]
