Jacob’s Ride Coming To The Greene Turtle Annapolis

jacob-with-babe-ruth-statueJacob Landis, the young man who biked across America to raise money for people needing cochlear implant surgery, will speak at the November Annapolis Optimist Club meeting on Thursday, November 21st, 6:30pm, at the Green Turtle Annapolis Mall.  He will share his stories of Jacob’s Ride Campaign, the cross-country journey he made on his bike after pledging to raise $1 million for this cause.

Mr. Landis, 24, lost his hearing at age 10.  Through cochlear implant surgery, he was able to hear again. His success motivated him to help others who cannot afford this expensive procedure.  An avid biker and baseball fan, in 2012 he combined his two loves by biking cross-country and visiting each of the U.S’s thirty Major League Baseball stadiums to cheer for his favorite teams, advocating the importance of cochlear implant surgery along the way.  His route covered over 10,600 miles, beginning in hometown Annapolis and reaching Seattle and Los Angeles before returning east, to Miami, Florida.

Jacob was hit while cycling by a tractor-trailer, 90 miles from his final destination.  His injuries included a concussion, a broken cheekbone, and a broken nose.  Bruised but unbowed, he walked his bike into his 30th stadium, completing his goal.

Jacob’s connection with the Annapolis Optimists began in January 2012 when we learned of this remarkable young man and his journey.  The club provided funds for his trip and supported him throughout his long trek.  As a result, a friendship began which continues, as Jacob donates his time and energy to our club.

Jacob will bring us up-to-date on his trip and his continuing work on cochlear implants since returning to Annapolis.
