Eye On Annapolis Wins Baltimore Sun’s Mobbie Award

MobbiesOver the past two weeks, you have likely been inundated with requests to vote for your favorite something–blog, Facebook page, Twitter feed, Instagram account, humor account, etc.  The Baltimore Sun has recognized the importance of “non-traditional” media in the region and established The Mobbie Awards five years ago. While television has their Emmys and print has their Pulitzers, we now have our Mobbies–and it is kind of a big deal!  We were thrilled to be nominated again and we appreciate your patience as we asked time and time again (and one more time for good measure) for your vote. And now it is time to say THANK YOU!!

We were nominated in three categories–Best News Blog, Best Facebook Page, and Best Organization on Twitter.  There were more than 120 entities nominated for various categories from all across the region and we came out on top for the best organization on Twitter and a very close second place in the Best Facebook Page and the Best News Blog.  WOW, thank you! While there is no statuette (hey, it’s a newspaper running this thing and they are not exactly flush with cash), nor is there a cash award (see my previous point); but for an online entity, there is something equally as valuable–free advertising on BaltimoreSun.com!

Our Mobbie hat and award for Best Organization on Twitter

The award ceremony was held at the Creative Alliance in Baltimore, catered by RA Sushi,  and attended by several hundred people. The emcees for the night were Michael Gold and Julie Scharper of the Baltimore Sun.  It was a terrific opportunity to connect with colleagues who previously only existed online and to meet new ones as well.

While the award is great and humbling, I was more excited to see so many other Anne Arundel County blogs in the running and to see how well they did.  And even more impressive was that the Editors of the Baltimore Sun did not have an award for, but specifically pointed out our very own Naptown Pint as a blog to watch–great job Liz Murphy!  You can also catch Liz in print–she debuts her Craft Beer column for The Capital today I think.

The Anne Arundel County blogs, pages, and feeds that were represented include:

These are all bookmarkable pages–good stuff all the way around.

Actually, all of the nominees were fantastic and ranged from the serious to the outlandish. Justin Berk, Meteorologist won the Reader’s Choice Award which was for the entity with the most votes. And one of the best blogs was the Editor’s Choice–The Baltimore Chop which is an anonymously written entertainment, lifestyle and opinion blog in Baltimore. They had a “representative” accept their award to maintain their anonymity!

And perhaps the best part of the night was to see James MacArthur (Baltimore Spectator) and his nemesis, Justin Fenton (Baltimore Sun) hamming it up for Twitter.

And some other tweets from the night

While we focus on Anne Arundel, we also like to venture across the borders and explore “the dark side.” After the jump (yes, there is a little page number below) is a full alphabetical list of all of the nominees.  If you have some time, give them a look, leave a comment and tell them we said hello!
