Texting Leads To Charges For Woman In Fatal Crash

UpdateOn March 10, 2013 an automobile collision occurred in Gambrills that resulted in the death of Jonathan Wesley Roberts, 30, of Virginia.

Investigation revealed that 20-year-old Elizabeth Haley Meyers, of Severn, was attempting to cross Route 3 northbound from the S.J. Chadwick Building exit to the parking lot of the Royal Farms Store when the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt she was driving traveled into the path of a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle, driven by Roberts in the left lane. The motorcycle struck the driver’s side of the Chevrolet. Roberts suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A witness told police he saw Meyers texting on a cell phone as she pulled into the roadway. Cell phone records corroborate the witness’ statement.

The Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and has charged Meyers with Negligent Manslaughter by Motor Vehicle, Criminal Negligent Manslaughter, Reckless Driving, Negligent Driving, Failure to Yield Right of Way and Text Messaging While Driving.

Meyers was served an arrest warrant on October 2, 2013.
