Taxi Driver In Critical Condition After Gambrills Crash

Screen Shot 2013-10-07 at 4.26.29 PMOn Monday October 7, 2013, at approximately 12:07 p.m., Western District Officers responded to the area of Defense Highway near Rutland Road in Gambrills for a report of a serious motor vehicle collision that just occurred. Officers arrived on scene and found a 2005 Dodge Caravan taxicab with the driver trapped inside with life threatening injuries. Investigators from the Traffic Safety Section responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation.

The initial investigation revealed that Dodge Caravan was traveling northbound on Defense Hwy (MD Route 450) when for reasons unknown the driver began to lose control in a curve and traveled across the double yellow lane lines. The vehicle subsequently struck a 2011 Ford E450 box truck that was traveling southbound in a side swiping fashion before the front of the vehicle traveled under the side of the truck and struck the rear axle. This caused heavy front end damage to the Dodge, entrapping the driver. Anne Arundel County Fire Department Paramedics treated the driver of the Dodge and transported him to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore priority one via ambulance. The driver of the Ford was also transported by Anne Arundel County Fire Department Paramedics to Anne Arundel Medical Center with minor injuries.

At this point in the investigation, it is unknown if alcohol or a prior medical condition were contributing factors in this case. Preliminarily, it appears that driver error and weather conditions contributed significantly to the severity of this crash. The investigation is continuing.
