Show Us Your Plate Winner Revealed

image001It’s all over and a winner has been named in the Chesapeake Bay Trust’s “Show Us Your Plate” contest. The Trust, a non-profit grantmaking organization dedicated to restoring the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers, launched a contest this summer asking Marylanders to get outside and take a picture of their Treasure the Chesapeake license plate in unusual places. The three finalists all displayed the Bay plate in creative ways, but in the end, nostalgia won out with an entry from Connie Michael, from Pasadena, Md. receiving the most votes.  Her picture depicted her Bay plate with some classic television characters from the Andy Griffith Show.

“I live in Anne Arundel County, so I am near the water and love seeing it every day,” said Michael. “Since I already had a plate cover about fishing with Andy & Opie, the idea came to me to dress my son and grandson up like them, and find a spot close enough to the Patapsco River so we could get the plate, them and the water all in one picture together.”

Pictures of the Treasure the Chesapeake license plate were submitted from August through September on www.bayplate.org, with three finalists voted on by the general public. The other finalists included Thien Le of Germantown, Md., who submitted a picture of a Bay plate surrounded by wild horses while on a camping trip at Assateague Island National Seashore, and Matt Geldmacher, of Annapolis, Md., who showcased his Bay pride on a racecar at a drifting event in New Jersey. The contest was launched by the Chesapeake Bay Trust to help promote Maryland’s Treasure the Chesapeake license plate. Bay plates cost $20 and its proceeds support environmental education, community outreach and Bay restoration work throughout Maryland.

“Lots of people might not know that Bay plates not only look great on their car, but are helping restore the Chesapeake Bay,” said Molly Alton Mullins, communications director for the Chesapeake Bay Trust. “Proceeds from the Bay plate are directed to the Chesapeake Bay Trust, a nonprofit organization that funds environmental education and restoration programs throughout Maryland communities. Thanks to Bay plate purchasers, the Trust is able to support programs that get kids outside, clean up trash, restore shorelines and plant trees all over Maryland.”

“I bought a bay plate for two reasons; first of course to help ‘treasure the bay’. Secondly, it looks great,” said Michael. “My family loves the water. My grandsons are just beginning to experience the fun of going fishing and I want a healthy place for them to be able to go enjoy the water for fishing, boating, and more. On a broader level, we need to develop within our children an appreciation and importance of preserving the health of our waterways now so they will still be thriving for generations to come.”

For winning the contest, Michael will receive a $100 Amazon gift card among other gifts and prizes. If you do not have a Bay plate currently on your vehicle, you can order one online easily at www.bayplate.org. (The plates will be mailed directly to your home.)
