Baysox Nominated For Larry MacPhail Award

BaysoxThe Bowie Baysox and the Eastern League of Professional Baseball Clubs have announced that the Baysox are the league’s nominee for the Larry MacPhail Award, presented to a club that demonstrated outstanding and creative marketing and promotional efforts during the past season.

An overall winner is selected from the nominees from each league by Minor League Baseball and honored at the 2013 Baseball Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla.

The Baysox enjoyed an exciting season in 2013, topping their attendance from 2012 and increasing marketing initiatives both out in the community and inside the ballpark. The team partnered with various organizations, including Special Olympics Maryland, Wounded Warriors organizations and Bowie Youth & Family Services to encourage fans to come out to the park for a good cause.

The Baysox partnered with Special Olympics Maryland on Opening Night, holding a ticket fundraiser to benefit the group and honoring athletes from the organization before the game. The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics was also held before the game to raise awareness and funds for the organization.

In June, Prince George’s Stadium played host to the first NFL Stars vs. Wounded Warriors Charity Softball Game. Local NFL Stars, including Torrey Smith of the Ravens and Josh Morgan of the Redskins, played against the Wounded Warriors Amputee Softball Team and proceeds from ticket sales were donated to charity.

For the sixth year, the Baysox brought back Louie’s Holiday Hope Project, which works in conjunction with Bowie Youth & Family Services, Bowie Police and P.G. Fire & EMS to help local families have a happier holiday experience. The Baysox collected gifts and accepted donations throughout the season and Louie delivered many of the gifts himself in December.

The Read & Hit a Home Run Reading Program also returned for its 17th season. More than 200 local schools participated and any child that read at least four books received a free ticket to a Baysox game. The Baysox visited a number of local schools and helped show 80,000 kids how reading could be fun in 2013.

Some promotional highlights from the 2013 season include the immensely popular Manny Machado Garden Gnome giveaway in August presented by Miss Utility, Night at the Races featuring the Bowie Studs and monthly Military Appreciation Nights. The Baysox also hosted a number of celebrity appearances, including Ravens Kicker Justin Tucker, professional wrestler Kevin Nash and Alfonso Ribeiro, aka ‘Carlton Banks,’ from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

The Baysox were also honored with the Business Partnership Award at the 2013 Bowie Public Safety Awards Ceremony. The award program is a joint effort of the Greater Bowie Chamber of Commerce and the City of Bowie Public Safety Committee and the award was presented to the Baysox because of their partnership with the Bowie Police Department. The Baysox partner with the Bowie Police on a number of initiatives, including the Police Explorer’s program, and allow the police access to the facility for training exercises.
