The Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) will award the coveted Chesapeake Cup to Woodside Elementary School on Wednesday, September 25 at 10 a.m.
The Glen Burnie elementary school emerged victorious from a pool of 12 eligible contenders to win the Cup, which is awarded annually for outstanding participation in the library’s Summer Reading Club.
Hall Worthington, president of the library’s Board of Trustees, and AACPL Executive Director Hampton “Skip” Auld will present the trophy to Woodside Principal Melissa Gilroy during a special ceremony on the school’s campus, located at 160 Funke Road in Glen Burnie.
Several local leaders will be on hand to make remarks during the Chesapeake Cup presentation ceremony, including Mamie Perkins, Acting Superintendent of Anne Arundel County Public Schools, and a representative from the office of County Executive Laura Neuman. County and state elected officials have also been invited to speak. A special appearance by Sneaks the Library Cat is planned as well.
Chesapeake Cup Facts:
- The Library awards the Chesapeake Cup annually to one public and one private school that achieve at least 25 percent participation in AACPL’s Summer Reading Club. Woodside Elementary was chosen at random from the list of public schools that achieved that milestone and will display the Cup throughout the 2013-2014 school year.
- Woodside Elementary also took home the “most improved participation” prize, with Summer Reading Club enrollment up 12 percent at the school since last year. A total of 77 out of the school’s 325 students signed up for the Summer Reading Club.
- The 2013 Summer Reading Club, which encompassed scores of events held across the library system’s 15 branch locations, recorded a total attendance of more than 16,300. This summer’s theme was “Dig Into Reading.”
- One-hundred and sixty-five local teenagers volunteered more than 4,000 hours of their summer free time to organize the events and enlist younger students for the Summer Reading Club. That’s an average of more than 24 hours per “Volun-teen!”
- This is the 17th year that the library has awarded the Chesapeake Cup.
- Several other public schools will be honored with certificates recognizing high Summer Reading Club participation (25 percent of students or more): Bodkin, Cape St. Claire, Crofton, Crofton Meadows, Crofton Woods, Deale, Folger McKinsey, Mayo, Piney Orchard, Severna Park and West Annapolis elementary schools.
The Naval Academy Primary School is the private school recipient of the Chesapeake Cup for 2013. Worthington and Auld will present the Cup to Devin Clouse, the school’s Director, at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 25. The school is located at 74 Greenbury Point Road, Annapolis.
In addition to the Naval Academy Primary School, the Book of Life Academy in Annapolis also achieved the 25 percent registration benchmark with the library’s 2013 Summer Reading Club.
