Kneseth Israel Presents Free Lecture By Author And Physician Itzhak Brook

3404079On Tuesday September 10 at 7:30pm, Congregation Kneseth Israel presents a lecture to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War. Author and Physician Itzhak Brook will share his experiences, struggles, fears, and challenges as he cared for his soldiers’ physical and emotional needs, including their post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His talk gives a perspective of the 1973 war that shaped the author’s own life and Israel’s identity. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Itzhak Brook, MD, MSc, is a Professor of Pediatrics at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington DC. He was born and raised in Haifa, Israel and graduated from the Hareali Haivri High School, earning his medical degree from Hebrew University, Hadassah School of Medicine, in Jerusalem. Dr Brook completed a residency in pediatrics at Kaplan Hospital in Rehovot, Israel. He served in the Israeli army as a medic in the Six Day War in 1967 and as a battalion physician during the Yom Kippur war in 1973. Subsequently, he completed a fellowship in adult and pediatric infectious diseases at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine. He served in the medical corps of the US Navy for 27 years. Dr. Brook specializes in pediatrics and infectious diseases. His areas of expertise are anaerobic and head and neck infections including sinusitis. He has done extensive research on respiratory tract infections and infections following exposure to ionizing radiation. He is the author of six medical textbooks, 135 medical book chapters and over 700 scientific publications. He is an editor of three and associate editor of four medical journals. Dr. Brook a board member of the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance. Dr. Brook was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2006.
