Generation Next: College & Career Summit September 28th

AAWDCGeneration Next:  College and Career Summit is taking place on Saturday, September 28th at Anne Arundel Community College’s Arnold campus, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., in the Center for Applied Learning and Technology (CALT).

Generation Next has been developed to offer college-bound teens and their parents information about the admissions and financial aid processes, and also offers a workshop on career exploration.  Included in the admissions workshop will be information about the Common Application, early decision process, and the transfer process for those teens who plan to attend community college before transferring to a four-year institution of higher learning.  The financial aid workshop will include information about the FAFSA application and other forms of financial aid.  The Career Exploration session will help students identify career pathways based on their areas of interest.

“We identified a need to offer information to college-bound youth, especially for those who will be the first-generation attendees in their families,” stated Gretchen Huntley, Acting CEO of the Anne Arundel County Community Action Agency, which is one of the organizations involved in the event.  “This event is targeting 11th and 12th graders, but any youth interested in attending college is welcome.  We strongly encourage parents to attend.”

Anne Arundel County Workforce Development Corporation is presenting a session entitled “Major Decision: Choosing a College Major that Suits Your Interest.”  In this session, youth will use a self-directed search tool in order to help them identify their personality types and to begin Career Exploration, the results of which will help them decide what genre of work they should consider pursuing and the education path needed to achieve that goal.

Generation Next is a building block to providing youth the skills needed to chart a successful career path,” stated Kirkland Murray, President and CEO of the Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation.

Anne Arundel Community College will showcase their Student Achievement and Success Program (SASP), which is a support and retention program designed to increase the academic success, retention, graduation and transfer of students who traditionally have more barriers and challenges to overcome in order to realize their goals.

“We are excited about this opportunity to help students successfully support the local economy by learning how to enroll in college and gain the training and education credentials necessary for a career in today’s world,” said Dr. John Grabowski, the Dean of Enrollment Services at Anne Arundel Community College.

The college’s Campus Information and Visitor Services will have representatives on hand to provide attendees with a guided walking tour of the AACC campus.

Lunch will be provided to all attendees of the program.  There is no cost involved for those wishing to attend, but space is limited so those interested are strongly encouraged to register at their earlier convenience.
